Cruise ships turned away over Falkland Islands stop

The diplomatic row between Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands escalated a notch today when two ships carrying British passengers ? P&O Cruises' Adonia and Princess Cruises' Star Princess ? were turned away from the Argentine port of Ushuaia.
A spokeswoman for P&O Cruises said the official reason given for Adonia being denied entry to the port was "due to the ship having been in the Falkland Islands on Saturday." Adonia is on an 87-night round South America cruise.
Mention of Star Princess' visit to the Falkland Islands was also given in a statement from Princess Cruises. The ship is currently on a 14-night South America cruise that departed Rio de Janeiro on Feb. 18, and visited the British territory on Saturday.
Cruise Critic member Scrapchick is onboard Star Princess and commented on the message boards this morning: ?We ? were due in Ushuaia today after two days at sea since leaving Stanley, Falkland Islands [the islands' capital]. Last night we were told a container ship was in our berth and its crew were on strike so we could be delayed arriving in Ushuaia. At 7AM this morning the captain announced we were being denied entry to Ushuaia, along with the P&O Adonia, because both ships had come from the Falklands.?
The port from which a ship has just departed is usually not a point of contention. But 30 years after the Falklands War, the dispute between Britain and Argentina over sovereignty of the islands is threatening to boil over again. To that end, the Argentine government has recently issued a decree that all ships traveling between Argentina and the Falklands now need its permission to do so.
Although Star Princess visited Buenos Aires before Port Stanley without any problems, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph, both it and Adonia have been forced to bypass Ushuaia for that very reason: permission denied.
The antagonism works both ways. In January, Star Princess was refused entry to Port Stanley, ostensibly because it had a small outbreak of norovirus onboard, but suspicions arose that the ship was turned away because it was carrying some Argentine passengers.
Both ships have continued on to Punta Arenas, Chile, their next scheduled port of call. The cost of the passengers' excursions will be refunded. The next few ships due at either Port Stanley or Ushuaia ? which include Holland America Line's Veendam and Silversea's Silver Explorer ? are either coming from or headed for a Chilean port, so in theory they shouldn't be affected by the row.

Erosional origin of linear dunes on Earth and Saturn's moon Titan
ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? Linear dunes, widespread on Earth and Saturn's moon, Titan, are generally considered to have been formed by deposits of windblown sand. It has been speculated for some time that some linear dunes may have formed by "wind-rift" erosion, but this model has commonly been rejected due to lack of sufficient evidence. Now, new research supported by China's NSF and published this week in GSA BULLETIN indicates that erosional origin models should not be ruled out.
The linear dunes in China's Qaidam Basin have been proposed to have formed as self-extending lee dunes under a unidirectional wind regime owing to a high level of total silt, clay, and salt content or cohesiveness of sediments, and they have undergone southward lateral migration at rates of up to 3 m/yr.
New GSA BULLETIN research examines the sediments, internal structures, and optically stimulated luminescence ages of the linear dunes in the central Qaidam Basin approximately 80 km north of the city Golmud. The study's findings suggest that the linear dunes are most likely of erosional origin similar to yardangs with orientations controlled by strikes of joints.
According to the study's lead author, Jianxun Zhou of the China University of Petroleum's State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resource & Prospecting, "If the control of tectonic structures on the orientation of wind-eroded ridges is taken into account, morphodynamic interpretations for the wind-rift model may become much simpler. No one has considered the possibility of erosional origin for the linear dunes on Titan. Nearly all researchers consider the linear dunes on Titan to be of depositional origin, but their morphodynamic interpretations are complicated and their relationships to wind directions are in dispute. If an erosional origin is considered, the morphodynamic interpretations of the linear dunes on Titan can also be greatly simplified."

MWC 2012: ViewSonic Details More Tablets: 7, 10 inch Android Models and One With Windows

ViewSonic introduced not only a Retina Display handset, but also a 7 inch Android slate and 10 incher Windows and Android models. Now it appears that the company has 3 more slates coming up. Engadget is saying that ViewSonic will unveil at MWC 2012 a 7 inch tablet, a 9.7 inch one and a 10 inch unit.
The 7 inch one is the ViewSonic ViewPad G70, that we already knew about. This one comes with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage, plus Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Next up there?s the 9.7 inch ViewPad E100, with a 1GHz processor, a 1024 x 768 pixel display and Android 4.0 once more. This device measures less than 0.4 inches in thickness and should weigh around 1.4 pounds There?s also the ViewSonic ViewPad P100, with a 10 inch 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail CPU and Windows 7 as the OS.
From the sound of things, the ViewPad E100 is actually an updated Chinese ViewPad 97a and the ViewPad P100 is actually a modified ViewPad 10pi with the new CPU replacing the slower Oak Trail unit. Starting from tomorrow we?ll also be providing quality hands on videos straight from Barcelona.

DINWIDDIE, Va.?--?An?employee at a Wal-Mart distribution center?shot his manager in her leg, then fatally shot?himself Wednesday afternoon,?the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office told?NBC station WWBT of Richmond.
The shooter was a 32-year-old Petersburg man who had worked in the shipping department for nine years, WBBT said. He was working on the day shift and had just returned from his lunch break when he opened fire, the Sheriff's Office told WWBT. After shooting?his manager,?he?fired two shots at deputies responding to the scene?before turning the gun on himself, officials told WWBT.
Authorities said the 40-year-old manager, also from Petersburg,?has worked at the facility for 18 years. Authorities?are withholding her and the gunman's names until their families are notified, WBBT said.

New research has established the "miracle material" called graphene as the world's thinnest known coating for protecting metals against corrosion. Their study on this potential new use of graphene appears in ACS Nano.
In the study, Dhiraj Prasai and colleagues point out that rusting and other corrosion of metals is a serious global problem, and intense efforts are underway to find new ways to slow or prevent it. Corrosion results from contact of the metal's surface with air, water or other substances. One major approach involves coating metals with materials that shield the metal surface, but currently used materials have limitations. The scientists decided to evaluate graphene as a new coating. Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms, many layers of which are in lead pencils and charcoal, and is the thinnest, strongest known material. That's why it is called the miracle material. In graphene, the carbon atoms are arranged like a chicken-wire fence in a layer so thin that is transparent, and an ounce would cover 28 football fields.
They found that graphene, whether made directly on copper or nickel or transferred onto another metal, provides protection against corrosion. Copper coated by growing a single layer of graphene through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) corroded seven times slower than bare copper, and nickel coated by growing multiple layers of graphene corroded 20 times slower than bare nickel. Remarkably, a single layer of graphene provides the same corrosion protection as conventional organic coatings that are more than five times thicker. Graphene coatings could be ideal corrosion-inhibiting coatings in applications where a thin coating is favorable, such as microelectronic components (e.g., interconnects, aircraft components and implantable devices), say the scientists.

With help from its global investors the Australian Government's Agency for International Development (AusAID), CSIRO - Australia's national science agency, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (through the Swedish International Cooperation Development Agency) the BecA-ILRI Hub has set up a unique capacity building fund, referred to as the Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) for African scientists. The ABCF enables African scientists from across Africa to access the world-class research facilities and scientific support skills to progress their research.
"The BecA-ILRI Hub is about helping Africans deal with Africa's underlying issues with food production, nutrition and animal health by investing in our scientists and students" says Dr Segenet Kelemu, Director of the BecA-ILRI Hub.
"Unless we address these fundamental issues by working with farmers on the ground in Africa and boost the science and technology capacity of our African research through our scientific institutions and initiatives like the ABCF, we'll never solve the crises that are happening across Africa" adds Dr Kelemu.
"So many of our talented African scientists leave Africa to progress their careers and don't come back to Africa, finding opportunities elsewhere in the world. This is a big problem for Africa" says Dr Appolinaire Djikeng, Senior Scientist and Technology Manager at the BecA-ILRI Hub.
Dr Djikeng adds "these scientists are some of Africa's best, working on extremely important issues directly related to food security and income generation in the region. The ABCF makes it possible to solve these regional issues, here in Africa." Projects include investigations of the spread of African swine fever, breeding improved varieties of orphan crops like Enset (commonly called 'false banana'), and conserving and better using Africa's native livestock diversity, such as its indigenous chickens. These projects are being led by scientists from national programs and universities in sub?Saharan Africa.
"There's a massive opportunity in Africa to be able to increase yields and increase farmers' access to infrastructure and markets to enable a transition out of poverty and hunger. That's what the BecA-ILRI Hub is doing along with the support from its partners and it's very exciting" says Dr Kelemu.
