Old Bridge Mayor Ticketed For Driving With Cellphone

OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP)?? A New Jersey mayor is praising a police officer in his hometown for ticketing him for driving while talking on a cellphone.

Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry was about to turn into the municipal complex when he was pulled over and given a summons on Tuesday.

The mayor said he knew talking on his phone while driving was wrong and made sure the officer gave him a ticket.

?I apologized for putting the officer in that position when he realized it was the mayor,? Henry told 1010 WINS. ?I said, ?I was on the phone, you got me, you were very observant and?I deserve a ticket.??

Henry said he will pay the $100 fine.

?I?m going to pay the ticket online, right away, and trust me, it will never happen again,? he said.

It?s against the law in New Jersey for motorists to talk or text on cellphones.

The mayor says he normally uses a hands-free device, which is allowed, but apparently he had taken it out of his vehicle.
