Results encourage researchers planning clinical study for rehabilitation

West Orange, NJ. December 14, 2011. Monitored by scientists at Kessler Foundation, six people with traumatic spinal cord injuries tested Ekso, the robotic exoskeleton from Ekso Bionics that enables wheelchair users to stand and walk. The six participated in one week of preliminary testing in October 2011. Five patients have paraplegia and one has quadriplegia; they ranged in age from 27 to 45 and had durations of injury from 4 months to 2 years. This video highlights their experiences: http://www.youtube.com/user/KesslerFoundation#p/u/0/HcSEL4FDAVs

In early 2012, the research team, headed by senior research scientist Gail Forrest, PhD, will commence a clinical study in collaboration with Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation.

The week of preliminary testing provided key information that will guide protocol development, including selection criteria for individuals with spinal cord injury. "We will look at the effects of standing and walking for people with paralysis due to spinal cord injury," said Dr. Forrest. "Whether there are physiologic changes taking place, and what those changes mean in terms of functional improvement." While the study at Kessler will focus on the benefits of Ekso in rehabilitation settings, Ekso Bionics also plans to explore the potential for home and community use.

NTSB recommends that states ban all cell phone use in cars

Smartphone in car

The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that states ban the use of cell phones and other portable electronic devices by drivers of vehicles, except for in an emergency. That doesn't mean you have to immediately stop using your Android smartphone for navigation or music playback -- there's still some legislating that needs to be done for that to happen. But a recommendation from the NTSB certainly holds some water.

The recommendation stems from a crash in Missouri in 2010 that involved a pickup truck, two school busses and a teenage driver who apparently had sent 11 text messages in as many minutes before the crash, which killed two and injured 38.

It's tough to say that phones don't distract drivers -- they most certainly can. But is a blanket ban too much? And would it even be effective?

Life wasn't so 'Wonderful' for Zuzu actress

David Duprey / AP

Life wasn't so wonderful for Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu in the film "It's a Wonderful Life."

By Ree Hines

You know that heartwarming moment at the end of ?It?s a Wonderful Life? ? the one where George Bailey?s adorable daughter Zuzu tells her father that ?every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings?? It closes the tale of redemption and appreciation perfectly and leaves the audience feeling that it really is a pretty darned good life.

Well, get ready to have that warm feeling sucked away, because for the actress who played Zuzu, life wasn?t so wonderful at all. In fact, according to a report published in the Washington Post, much of Karolyn Grimes? life proved downright tragic.

"My mother died when I was 12, and right after my dad died in a car crash,??said Grimes, who was just 6 when she played Zuzu.??I was 15 and had no family. The court sent me to live with my uncle and aunt in Missouri. ? They were kind of nutso, religious fanatics who didn't believe in movies, dancing, singing, that kind of thing. I don't think they believed in laughing, either."

From there, things didn?t exactly improve for Grimes, as she later lost a husband to cancer and a son to suicide.

?My life has never been wonderful,? she said. ?Maybe when I was a child, but not after age 15.?

Those looking for a bright spot in the 71-year-old?s story, something that might make this year?s requisite TV trip to Bedford Falls a little more bearable when Zuzu hits the screen, can (sort of) find it in this tidbit: Despite her tough times ? or maybe because of them ? Grimes takes comfort in the very film in which?she starred.

?It?s not a Christmas movie, not a movie about Jesus or Bethlehem or anything religious like that,? she said. ?It?s about how we have to face life with a lot of uncertainty, and even though nobody hears it, most of us ask God to show us the way when things get really hard? and (like in the film) it can be in Martini?s (bar), not a church on Christmas.?

This year marks the 65th anniversary of ?It?s a Wonderful Life.?

Is "Wonderful Life" one of your holiday favorites? Tell us in the comments.

(AP) ? Hundreds of friends, teenagers and teachers filled a North Carolina church Friday to join a family as it buried five children killed in what investigators have described as a family massacre.

Mourners packed into Pleasant Garden Baptist Church to attend the collective funeral for the five children, ages 8 to 17, who authorities say were gunned down in a shooting rampage by Mary Ann Holder, 36. Authorities say Holder apparently shot one of her sons and three other children while they slept at her Pleasant Garden home, shot and wounded her married former lover, then killed her younger son. Holder then killed herself.

Four of the children survived for days with what Sheriff BJ Barnes said were bullet wounds to the head. Holder left two notes apologizing for the pain she'd caused, Barnes said.

So many people attended the funeral in Guilford County that an overflow crowd gathered in the gym of the Family Life Center to watch a live video feed.

Four ministers led the service in the pulpit, under which lay the closed caskets of the five children. Three of the ministers eulogized the child or children they knew best.

Authorities say Holder killed her two sons: Robert Dylan Smith, 17, and Zachary Smith, 14. Barnes said she also killed the niece and nephew she took into her home when her sister died: Richard Brian Suttles, 17, and Hannaleigh Suttles, 8. She also mortally wounded Makayla Leigh Woods, Robert's 15-year-old girlfriend.

"It takes your breath away," friend Brooke Bex said. "I never thought I'd see my friends in a casket at that age."

Another friend, Adam Couch. was a pallbearer for Dylan Smith. He said he choked up when the family asked him to be part of the memorial.

"I never would have thought in a million years I'd be carrying my best friend to his grave, but I'm honored to do it," Couch said.

Holder's mother, Frances, said the family was praying that at least one of the children would survive to describe what happened. Frances Holder said she can't believe her daughter was responsible for the mass killings because she cared deeply for her children.

"People are calling my daughter a deadbeat mother, she was a no-good mother," Frances Holder said Thursday outside the church where mourners visited with the family. "She was very close to her children. I don't know what happened. I have no answers. I'm waiting for answers, just like everyone else."

Mary Ann Holder had been having an affair with Randall Lamb, 40, for more than three years, and its aftermath created months of bitter accusations involving Holder, Lamb and Lamb's wife, including allegations of stalking and harassment.

Jennifer Lamb had prepared but not yet filed a potentially costly lawsuit against Holder accusing her of alienating the affections of her husband, investigators said.

Mary Ann Holder met Randall Lamb the night before the shooting rampage to give him a $10,000 check in an apparent settlement aimed at staving off the threatened lawsuit, criminal investigators said in a search warrant. Holder then asked to meet him again the next morning in a community college parking lot.

That meeting ended with Holder firing several shots at Randall Lamb and wounding him in the shoulder. He recovered in a hospital and has returned home.
