Birmingham celebration will draw hundreds of breast cancer survivors

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Corita Fincher sat at her home computer Dec. 31, 2010, sending encouraging emails to others as she often did, when she felt a hot pang in her right breast.

"I said, 'that's strange,'" she said. "But I just kept typing."

The heat happened again. She stopped typing. Fincher discovered a lump in her breast, but thought it might be a cyst.

A diagnosis in January 2011 revealed that Fincher, an office associate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Nursing Department of Community Health, Outcomes and Systems, had breast cancer -- not just any form of the disease, but an aggressive version called triple negative. At the start, she had a 5-by-6-centimeter mass.

"I said, 'God, if this is what I need to go through, it's for my good and your glory,'" she said. "That's what I just kept saying through the whole time: 'If I am to witness to someone through it, after it, it's your will.'"

She endured chemotherapy, a lumpectomy and 33 radiation treatments. She finished those treatments in October.

Fincher is a cancer survivor.

Today, she plans to be with other survivors at "Celebrating Life," a National Cancer Survivors Day event at Regions Park in Hoover. The event, which begins at 6 p.m., will feature educational opportunities, children's activities and much more. The first 200 cancer survivors will receive a free T-shirt and ticket to see the Barons play the Chattanooga Lookouts.

The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Barons and various Alabama cancer-related organizations are putting on the event, which will feature an honor wall that allows participants to honor a loved one who has battled cancer.

Fincher said she is blessed that she worked at UAB, where she had access to a wealth of expertise, from breast cancer researchers to doctors who were instrumental in her path to recovery.

She now wants to empower others to help save their lives.

She is training to be a volunteer with the Community Health Advisors as Research Partners through the Deep South Network for Cancer Control. Her role as an advocate is to encourage the underserved populations in the importance of prevention and early detection of cancer, she said.

Fincher knows that so many others lack resources and don't even have access to a mammogram, especially in the areas where there are no medical clinics. Early detection is vital for the many cancers.

Dr. Karen Meneses, an oncology nurse, associate dean for research and professor in UAB's School of Nursing, said disparities exist, especially in rural areas and in the Black Belt.

Meneses said a hurdle for many in the rural communities is high poverty and little access to information for support. Without the ability to share, people are not able to learn accurate information about cancer, treatment and follow-up care guidelines.

Outreach is being done in northeast counties of the state, where there is a large Hispanic population, and the Black Belt, where more than a third of the people are poor.

"It's helping to arm them with better information about how to care for themselves," Meneses said.

Fincher, 50, is excited to be a part of outreach to assist others.

"I've always wanted to do causes," she said. "but my life was so busy. When it hit me, now I have a platform. Now, I can be an advocate to help those who are less fortunate."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Jobs growth probably snapped back in May from weather-related distortions that had slowed hiring, suggesting the economy was still expanding moderately despite strong headwinds from Europe.

Employers probably created 150,000 jobs last month, according to a Reuters survey of economists, after generating a paltry 115,000 positions in April - the fewest in six months.

That would bring nonfarm employment growth closer to its 176,000 a month average of the past three months and temper fears that economic activity could be stagnating.

"The labor market is getting better, but the glass is still half empty. I think a big part of the weather and seasonal issues that have been weighing on the jobs numbers is now behind us," said Harm Bandholz, chief U.S. economist at UniCredit Research in New York.

Unseasonably warm weather brought forward hiring into the winter months, causing the labor market's recovery to take a step back in March and April.

If the forecasts are accurate, the government's jobs report on Friday could shore up confidence that has been shaken by a raft of soft regional factory surveys and a worsening of the debt crisis in Europe.

Economists have blamed Europe's prolonged financial crisis and slowing Chinese growth for sluggish U.S. factory activity in May, which has evoked among investors memories of the slackening of job growth in the summer of 2011 when the U.S. recovery nearly stalled.

That fear has pushed the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note to a record low, while punishing stocks. The Standard & Poor's 500 index shed 6 percent of its value in May.

The anticipated job gains would be consistent with economic growth of between a 2 percent and 2.5 percent annual rate. U.S. GDP grew at a 1.9 percent pace in the first quarter.

While the rise in employment would still be subpar by historical standards, the data is not expected to have a major impact on the monetary policy outlook. Economists said it would take a payrolls number below 100,000 to jolt the Federal Reserve into action.

LITTLE ENTHUSIASM FOR MORE MONETARY EASING

However, it likely will not be strong enough to ease the pressure on President Barack Obama, who faces a tough re-election vote in November. The level of employment is still 5 million jobs below where it was in December 2007, when the economy fell into recession.

Analysts say the economy needs to create roughly 125,000 jobs a month just to keep the unemployment rate steady. While the jobless rate has dropped by 1 percentage point since August, that has largely been due to people leaving the labor force.

Economists expect the jobless rate to hold at a three-year low of 8.1 percent in May, although it could decline further if the exodus from the labor force continues. That exodus has reflected both baby boomers reaching retirement age and disenchanted unemployed people giving up the hunt for work.

The labor force participation rate - the share of working-age Americans who either have a job or are looking for one - dropped to a 30-year low in April.

The private sector is expected to account for all the job gains for a third straight month, adding 160,000 positions. Government payrolls are seen dropping by 10,000, dragged down by ongoing belt-tightening by local governments.

Construction employment is expected to rebound in May after declining in the prior three months, driven by an increase in residential construction.

Manufacturing, the recovery's star performer, is expected to show another month of gains.

In light of the high unemployment rate, average hourly earnings are seen rising a slight 0.2 percent.

"Given the current pace of growth, we are not going to see average hourly earnings increase in any significant way," said Sam Bullard, a senior economist at Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Hello all!

Tally here checking up if anyone is interested in partnering with me for an idea I have.

Lately I've been involved in a lot of real-life sort of roleplays or books and despite my love for fantasy and fiction writing topics, I'm feeling the need to write something about life. I don't mean some boring biography about nothing in particular.

I'm taking about the Game of Life.

You know that board game everyone used to own? You go to school, major in college, get a job, get married, buy a house, have children, grow old, and then win the game, right? That board game makes life seem like a walk in the park even though life is anything but. Everyone in this world will suffer and go through some sort of pain. Everyone has their low and high moments. Yet I feel as though recent roleplays and stories I've been involved in seem very one dimensional. Some characters are always depressed. Some characters are always happy. Life isn't like that.

Which is why I'm interested in writing a story about life.

Specifically, about the struggles that come along in life, such as love, death, pain, betrayal, and growth, both in age and character. I'm interested in collaborating with someone to write about two teenagers, high-schoolers to be exact, and their struggles in life. So far I can't say that I have much of a story plot to work with, but I have some ideas and I'm willing to work with your ideas and contributions as well: I am sincerely interested in the ideas you have to offer. If you are still interested, the section below has the details that may or may not play a part in the story-line.

Setting: I don't really care where this takes place, though I want it to be in present day. As writers, this is the time period we are most familiar and is more likely to give us a broader spectrum of writing tools. The high-school will be a private school so uniforms will be worn, but otherwise I have no other expectations to a specific setting.

Characters: I have several different ideas for our couple, though I promise these aren't the only ideas I'm limited to.

Plot: Aforementioned, I don't really have much of a plot developed since I'm not sure what the characters are yet, but I do know a couple of things will be present in the story. Obviously, romance will be occurring between the characters, but with that comes jealousy and even bullying at times. There's also going to be family problems, teacher problems, and student problems that will make life for the characters difficult. Rumors can be a big part of this too because they always seem to screw up relationships.

Roleplayer Wanted: To be completely clear, I am looking for someone who will write for a male character. I don't care if the writer is female or male, I just want a male character as I will be playing the female. The roleplayer should be comfortable with romance and mature themes such as sex, abuse, rape, and so on. This is a story of life, after all. By no means does this mean I am asking for someone to cyber. I myself am not offended by writing minorly sexual scenes, but this story isn't going to be a porno. The roleplayer should be literate and should have good grammar and spelling skills; being able to help add to the plot is another feature I'll be looking for. I'm not asking for you to write a novel, but posts should be lengthy if possible.

Writing: I'm all up for writing in the roleplay tab, but I'm also open to PM and IM. I'm less inclined to write via IM because it's hard to coordinate time, though if push comes to shove, I'm up for it. I like PM a lot more for 1x1 roleplays because you are informed whenever you get a reply.
