Night Shift Might Boost Women's Breast Cancer Risk: Study

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) -- Women who work the night shift more than twice a week might be increasing their risk for breast cancer, Danish researchers find.

Moreover, the risk appears to be cumulative and highest among women who describe themselves as "morning" people rather than "evening" people, the researchers say.

"About 10 to 20 percent of women in modern societies have night shift work," said lead researcher Johnni Hansen. "It might therefore be one of the largest occupational problems related to cancer."

Right now, the reasons for these findings are uncertain.

"Night shift work involves exposure to light at night, which decreases the production of the night hormone melatonin that seems to protect against certain cancers," said Hansen, of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society, in Copenhagen.

In addition, light at night might introduce circadian disruption, where the master clock in the brain becomes desynchronized from local cellular clocks in different body organs, affecting the breast, he said.

"Repeated phase shifting may lead to defects in the regulation of the circadian cell cycle, thus favoring uncontrolled growth," Hansen said.

Also, sleep deprivation after night shift work leads to the suppression of the immune system, which might increase the growth of cancer cells, he added.

This is not the first time this association has been recognized. In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, said that working the night shift is "probably carcinogenic to humans," according to background information in the study.

The new study was published in the May 28 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

To determine the effect of night shift work on the risk for breast cancer, Hansen's team collected data on more than 18,500 women who worked for the Danish Army between 1964 and 1999.

The researchers identified 210 women who had breast cancer and compared them to almost 900 similar women who did not have breast cancer.

All of the women were asked about their working patterns, lifestyles and other factors such as their use of contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, and their sunbathing habits.

In addition, women were asked to classify themselves as "morning" or "evening" people.

In all, 141 women with breast cancer responded to the study questionnaires. In addition, 551 women who did not have breast cancer responded.

Among these women, the risk for breast cancer was increased 40 percent if they worked at night, the researchers found.

But for women who worked nights at least three times a week, and for at least six years, the risk was doubled, the findings showed.

Women who worked the night shift but who described themselves as morning people were at even higher risk of breast cancer. They were almost four times more likely to develop breast cancer as those who didn't work nights, according to the researchers.

In comparison, women who considered themselves evening people were twice as likely to develop breast cancer, they added.

Morning-preferring women who did not work at night had a lower overall risk of breast cancer than evening types, Hansen's team found.

"Since night shift work is unavoidable in modern societies, this type of work should be limited in duration and limited to less than three night shifts per week," Hansen said. "In particular, morning types should limit their night work," he added.

While the study found an association between night shift work and breast cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Men who work at night may also be at risk for prostate cancer, Hansen noted. This evidence comes from three small studies, he said.

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that "it's very hard to single out the causes of breast cancer and whether women on the night shift have a higher risk."

But there appears to be some truth to this, she added.

"Stress increases the risk of breast cancer and affects the body as a whole, and working at night can throw off your circadian rhythm and cause stress," Bernik said.

"This is another finding that breast cancer is caused by a multitude of different environmental and genetic influences, so this is probably a piece of the puzzle," she added.

An expert on environmental factors that affect cancer, Richard Stevens, from the department of community medicine at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, Conn., said that "the evidence is growing rapidly about light at night and, specifically, shift work and breast cancer."

"But, this is the first study about the morning/evening preference," he noted.

"If it's true that light at night increases the risk of disease, then there are very practical implications," Stevens said.

If lighting is really an issue in night work, it is known which wavelengths suppress melatonin the most, and lighting could be adjusted to eliminate those wavelengths, he explained.

There are other things people can do to avoid the effects of light at night on health, he added.

"For example, for health in general, if you wake up during the night, stay in the dark; don't turn on the light. If you turn on the lights it will start suppressing melatonin immediately," Stevens said.

"There is a lot more involved than melatonin, but it's a good marker if your circadian rhythm is being changed," he said.

Studies are ongoing on the risk of night work and prostate cancer, Stevens noted.

Computer virus briefly hits Iran's oil industry

(AP) ? Iran's key oil industry was briefly affected by the powerful computer virus known as "Flame" that has unprecedented data-snatching capabilities and can eavesdrop on computer users, a senior Iranian military official said Wednesday.

The comment is the first direct link between the emergence of the new malware and an attack inside a highly sensitive computer system in Iran, which counts on oil revenue for 80 percent of its income. The full extent of last month's disruptions has not been given, but Iran was forced to cut Internet links to the country's main oil export terminal presumably to try to contain the virus.

It would be the latest high-profile virus to penetrate Iran's computer defenses in the past two years, boosting speculation that Israeli programmers could have struck again.

Experts see technological links between Flame and the highly focused Stuxnet virus, which was tailored to disrupt Iran's nuclear centrifuges in 2010. Many suspect Stuxnet was the work of Israeli intelligence.

Gholam Reza Jalali, who heads an Iranian military unit in charge of fighting sabotage, claimed that Iranian experts had detected and defeated the "Flame" virus. He told state radio that the oil industry was the only governmental body seriously affected and that all data that had been lost were retrieved.

"This virus penetrated some fields. One of them was the oil sector. Fortunately, we detected and controlled this single incident," Jalali said. "We could also retrieve the information that was lost."

Jalali said there has been no report of any other governmental agency being affected by the virus.

Iran's government-run Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center has said the highly sophisticated Flame virus appeared linked to espionage, but cited no specific country or source. International suspicion, however, immediately fell on Iran's archfoe Israel.

Israel's vice premier did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement in the cyberattack.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame on Tuesday. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Ali Hakim Javadi, Iran's deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying Wednesday that Iranian experts have already produced an anti-virus capable of identifying and removing Flame from computers.

The Computer Center "has produced an anti-virus capable of detecting and removing the Flame for the first time in the world," IRNA quoted Javadi as saying. "The anti-virus software was delivered to selected organizations in early May."

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the Flame virus is unprecedented in size and complexity.

Kaspersky's conclusion that the virus was crafted at the behest of a national government has fueled speculation it could be part of an Israeli-backed campaign of electronic sabotage against the Jewish state's archenemy.

The virus can activate a computer's audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled cellphones.

Aftana.ir, a government-run website, said the Flame has been active since 2010, the same year when a virus known as Stuxnet disrupted controls of some nuclear centrifuges and some other industrial sites in Iran.

Iran has acknowledged that Stuxnet affected a limited number of its centrifuges ? a key component in the production of nuclear fuel ? at its main uranium enrichment facility in the central city of Natanz. But Tehran has said its scientists discovered and neutralized the malware before it could cause serious damage.

Iran says is has previously discovered one more espionage virus, Duqu, but that the malware did no harm Iran's nuclear or industrial sites. Jalali said Flame is the third.

Iran says Stuxnet and other computer virus attacks are part of a concerted campaign by Israel, the U.S. and their allies to undermine its nuclear program and economy.

Kroll Ontrack Announces Seventh Annual Top Ten List of Data ...

Epsom, UK (PRWEB) December 13, 2010

Kroll Ontrack, the leading provider of data recovery, information management and legal technology products and services, has announced its light-hearted look at the top ten data disasters from 2010.

?Data loss situations continue to run the gamut in terms of when, where and how they happen, and the causes of loss can greatly vary. While every data loss situation is different, an experienced data recovery provider with the right tools, techniques and expertise can help ensure as much critical data as possible is recovered,? said Robert Winter, chief engineer, Ontrack Data Recovery, Kroll Ontrack. ?With cutting-edge hard drive recovery tools and processes backed by 25 years of experience in recovering data from media that are severely physically damaged, Ontrack Data Recovery engineers have recovered customers? data following some of this year?s worst disasters.?

2010 Top Ten List of Data Disasters Compiled by Kroll Ontrack

10. A square peg in a round hole

When a computer novice?s laptop battery died, he reached behind his desk, grabbed what he thought was the laptop charger and shoved the power cable into his laptop. Unfortunately, it was a power cord for a different device, and he fried his machine.

9. Double data recovery

A customer required the restoration of several archived tapes, and the Kroll Ontrack Tape Services team promptly restored the data and returned it on six external HDDs. The customer backed-up the data on six additional HDDs and stored the original HDDs in a fireproof safe. They started to use the data they needed from the backup HDDs, but somebody had accidentally overwritten some of the data. ?Not to worry!? they thought. ?We can simply use the Kroll Ontrack HDDs!? However, when these HDDs were connected, they discovered that rather than copying the data, they had actually moved the data, and there was nothing on the HDDs. Thankfully, Kroll Ontrack still had the original tapes and recovered the entire data for the second time.

8. Keeping a family member?s memory alive

A woman visiting her father to assist with his medical treatments became the victim of a thief, who entered the hospital room where the visitor had her belongings and stole a laptop that once belonged to the woman?s daughter. Sadly, the woman visitor had recently lost her daughter to cancer. News of the crime hit the airwaves immediately leading to a speedy arrest and recovery of the stolen laptop. However, the hard disk had been wiped. Kroll Ontrack contacted the family to assist and was able to recover 90 percent of the family?s only photos of their daughter.

7. Meat the experts

A hard drive recently arrived for Ontrack Data Recovery from a butcher shop packed in Styrofoam, mysteriously together with the remnants of a cured ham. After a thorough degreasing of the case, the hard drive was sent to the cleanroom with suspected mechanical failure. Thankfully, all the data was recovered, partly due to the fact that the client had followed Ontrack Data Recovery expert advice to preserve the drive in its found state and adequately protect the drive in transit. The presence of the ham remains an enigma.

6. Up in the air

A frequent traveller was enjoying an espresso while waiting for a plane home. He put his laptop case on the floor at the espresso bar and forgot to collect it. The airport police were notified of the unattended luggage, and while the traveller was on his plane, the laptop was detonated to ensure it was not a security threat.

5. Buckle up

A businesswoman, late for work, placed her briefcase on her car roof while she secured her coffee in her cup holder and her child in his car seat. Anxious to get on the road, the woman buckled up and quickly backed out of her garage, sending her briefcase, with laptop inside, soaring off the roof just in time for the front wheels to crush it.

4. Laptop litter box

A woman left her Mac charging on the floor of her house for a few hours. She returned to discover a liquid on the keyboard and a sheepish kitten playing in the corner.

3. Advocate for Africa

A man quit his job to fulfill his lifelong dream of travelling to Africa to photograph poverty. After spending several months taking pictures, he moved back home to develop and sell the photos to businesses, bringing focus to the need for human aid in Africa. Unfortunately, an apartment fire erupted, but luckily the fireman managed to grab the computer before it was charred. While rushing down the fire ladder, the computer was dropped. Despite two devastating accidents, Ontrack Data Recovery engineers recovered 100 percent of the photos.

2. The ants go marching in

A flood in Europe resulted in a computer being submerged in river and rain water for more than two days. The flood water was not the drive?s only problem. When the drive arrived at the Ontrack Data Recovery cleanroom, an ant, who tried to escape drowning in the flood, was found hanging from the head of the drive. Rigorous cleanroom techniques resulted in a recovery of most of the drive?s data; however, the ant could not be saved.

1. Laptops are not waterproof

Relaxing on a beach, a gentleman had taken his laptop on his holiday to stay up-to-date on e-mails. When the midday temperatures started to soar, he decided to go for a swim. Wary of leaving his laptop unattended, he popped it into a plastic bag so it would not get wet and went for a dip ? laptop and all. The bag did not prove as durable as he hoped: the laptop got soaked and he lost his data.

Washington hopes to buy historic ranch for conservation

BENTON COUNTY, Wash. (AP) ? Rattlesnake Mountain offers sweeping views of the historic McWhorter Ranch, a pristine property largely unchanged since it was settled in 1903, laced with dry grasses and sagebrush and home to elk and other wildlife. The ranch stretches down the mountain's south face across more than 20 square miles of Washington's shrinking shrub-steppe habitat.

In the not-so-far-off distance, another scene unfolds: the bustle of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan area, complete with high-tech businesses and newly-planted vineyards to support a booming wine industry.

McWhorter Ranch is going up for sale June 1, and given its size and location, the property could very likely draw bids from agricultural and real estate developers. But state and local officials are working with conservation groups to try to raise enough money to stave off any speculators and preserve it.

"There aren't many of these big ranches left. It's a rarity and it's precious," said Jeff Tayer, regional director for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. "As rare as this is now and as precious as it is now, it's nothing compared to how rare it will be 20 years from now."

Lucullus Virgil McWhorter traveled west from Ohio to settle a sprawling stretch of land in arid south-central Washington in 1903, raising sheep, cattle and children. He developed relationships with the Native American tribes in the area, studied their culture and helped them defend their land and water rights.

Generations of McWhorters grew up on the ranch that has become a shining example of conservation farming practices.

"It's amazing to look around and see, not only the beauty, but how's it been preserved," said Max Benitz, a former Benton County commissioner and longtime family friend who's serving as property caretaker. "It's just a real opportunity for perspective."

Adding to that perspective is that during World War II the federal government condemned some of McWhorter's land ? along with the land of many others ? for a top-secret project to build the atomic bomb. In the process, the Hanford nuclear reservation was born, spawning a nuclear industry that produced plutonium for the nation's weapons arsenal for decades.

Thousands of people now work to clean up the highly contaminated Hanford nuclear site. Scientific research there and at the nearby Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has spawned dozens of high-tech businesses in the Tri-Cities of Richland, Kennewick and Pasco.

In addition, agriculture remains a huge economic driver. Dozens of apple, pear and cherry orchards line the hillsides, and new vineyards are continually being planted to support Washington's growing wine industry, ranked second nationally behind California.

Industry and jobs have boosted the region's population beyond 260,000, and the U.S. Census Bureau earlier this year tagged it as the nation's fastest-growing metro area since 2010.

All that growth doesn't bode well for Washington's shrub-steppe habitat, which is just a fraction of what it was decades ago, and the species that rely on it.

Wildlife officials see the ranch, with its deep soils and healthy plants, as an opportunity to boost populations of threatened sage grouse and ferruginous hawk, as well as a number of other species: badgers, black-tailed and white-tailed jackrabbits, Townsend's ground squirrels, burrowing owls and pygmy rabbits.

"Shrub-steppe diversity is based on space. In a forest, you can create diversity by going up, but to enable biodiversity in shrub-steppe, you need land," said Mike Livingston of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Water could be an issue for anyone who wants to develop the site. The water supply for the ranch came from 13 cisterns, which were gravity fed from a natural spring higher up the mountain.

"Our experience has been that if there's a good place to develop, whether it's agriculture or housing, it gets developed," Fish and Wildlife's Tayer said. "Our idea is to focus development next to infrastructure and focus conservation on more remote areas. That's what we're trying to do here."

The property encompasses some 16,000 acres broken into three separate sales. The state is focusing its efforts on the main ranch of 14,135 acres as a public recreation spot for hikers, horseback riders, bird watchers and hunters.

Public land access for hunters is key to managing an elk herd that roams between private property, the nuclear site and the neighboring Hanford Reach National Monument. The herd is estimated at 700 animals ? roughly twice what wildlife managers say it should be ? largely because the elk migrate during hunting season to the federal lands, where hunting is barred.

"This could one of the largest remaining blocks of shrub-steppe that could be available for public acquisition, and the McWhorter family has been incredible stewards of the land," said Ranch Block, director of lands for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation based in Missoula, Mont. "We've committed to help financially, but as to what the value is and what the partnership is going to look like, it's too soon to say."

The McWhorter family declined to comment on the impending sale. The state has set aside $1.8 million toward the purchase. An appraisal of the property is still being completed, but Tayer estimates the state will likely need at least another $3.5 million to buy just the main ranch.

McWhorter's grandson, R.J. McWhorter, approached Tayer eight or nine years ago about selling the property to ensure it was preserved, Tayer said, but just couldn't part with it. R.J. McWhorter died in a four-wheeler accident on the ranch in 1987. He was 86.

Now his children have decided it's time to sell.

"My sense from the family is that they want to keep their options open," Tayer said. "We just hope we'll be the best option."

News and Society -Crime News Blog - Knowlesdave70's blog

Once again, we've been knocked asunder with news about another high school shooting. What is the answer? Anger seems to be on the rampage in our society, especially in adolescents. Perhaps we need to take a many pronged approach to this situation. Let's consider several possibilities.

1. Reduce violence in the media. Since the 1980's, killings, rampant sex, and explicit horror have all proliferated in TV programs. Horrific portrayal of hideous acts have increased exponentially.Videos and cable were coming into their prime, and censorship of TV programs began to go by different rules in an effort to compete. As a result, more and more violence and sex began to show up on television. We've had a whole generation exposed to escalating levels of aggressive acts and sexual promiscuity. They've become desensitized to human suffering and to basic morality. Adding injury to insult, the portrayal of horrible acts has become more and more blatant and offensive. One can hardly turn on the television without witnessing the worst kind of visceral horror. Skeletons are blackened with days of decay; blood abounds everywhere; and our senses are slayed with escalating levels of heartless actions.

2. Enforce stricter gun control. But I don't think this is the only answer. We need to reach troubled youth with heart and spirit changing beliefs. Young boys in particular tend to become disenfranchised when their lives are ripped apart. Make every effort to address issues of anger and shame in our young people. Boys tend to act out their anger. Girls turn in inward. Both are extremely detrimental.

3. Get back to spiritual basics. Statistics show that church attendance is at an all-time low. In Europe, two percent of the population attends church regularly. Spiritual institutions are kept open for tourists, not residents! This is sad. In 1991, weekly church attendance was at 49%. Today it's at 40%. There may be a direct correlation between the decline in spiritual activities and crime. This is debatable at best, but the lack of conscience formation may be a factor.

4. Get young people involved in wholesome activities. Sports, music lessons, dance lessons, and karate all come to mind.

5. Do everything to steer young people away from addictions. Get them involved in anti-drug programs. Talk to them routinely about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Chemical dependencies cause huge problems in individuals, families, and communities.

Readers, I welcome additional ideas.

For something so simple, pasta is serious business

A woman touches pasta in a hotel conference room in Rome, Friday, May 18, 2012. Pasta sales worldwide have grown steadily over the past three years. Pasta is serious business in Italy, and the recent blind taste test organized by the world's biggest pasta maker, Barilla, drove home that an awful lot of thought goes into making the simple combination of durum wheat semolina and water from which Italy's national dish is made. ROME (AP) ? They twirled, they sniffed, they slurped, they chewed.

The dozen housewives who gathered in a Rome hotel on a recent afternoon took their work terribly seriously, rating plates of pasta for chewiness, saltiness, gumminess or done-ness ? that perfect balance known as "al dente," or firm to the bite.

Pasta is serious business in Italy, and the recent blind taste test organized by the world's biggest pasta maker drove home that an awful lot of thought goes into making the simple combination of durum wheat semolina and water from which Italy's national dish is made.

"The simpler it is, the more testing it takes," said Stefania Fochi, in charge of consumer testing for market leader Barilla, which organized the taste test.

Pasta sales worldwide have grown steadily over the past three years, to ?22.3 billion ($28 billion) last year, according to Euromonitor research. In Italy, however, sales have fallen steadily over that same timeframe as the economy suffers and stores are forced to offer discounts. National pasta sales dropped to ?2.7 billion ($3.4 billion) last year from ?3.1 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2009 ? meaning spaghetti makers in these days of austerity need to try harder to keep their customers loyal.

Granted, in Italy, it's not a huge challenge given that most Italians eat a plate of pasta ? be it spaghetti alla carbonara, penne al ragu or orecchiette with broccoli ? at least once a day. But they are terribly discerning customers: A noodle is not just a noodle.

"Some were sticky, some were good, al dente and cooked the right amount of time," said Stefania De Rossi, a 46-year-old mother of three who was selected for the taste test because of her family's daily pasta habit. "I liked the last one (identified only by its code name: V36). It wasn't super smooth, it was a bit rough but seemed better."

Her pickiness stems in part from Italians' particular obsession with food: Eating in Italy is taken very seriously on both a family and cultural level. The Slow Food movement was born here and you can smell, see and taste this way of life at this time of year in outdoor markets, exploding with bundles of fresh asparagus now that the green and purple hills of artichokes have begun to wane.

And what better way to enjoy those asparagus tips than to sautee them in olive oil with bits of speck, a smoky cut of prosciutto, and toss the whole thing with a small mound of linguine?

"Pasta is truly the symbol, the emblem not just of Italian food ... but the principal plate of the Mediterranean diet," said Amelia Germoleo, vice director of the National Pasta Museum in Rome. "It's profoundly rooted in the culture, the lifestyle, the 'being' of Italy."

The museum, which is currently closed for renovations, seeks to enlighten visitors about pasta's past, including the very Italian origins of dried pasta, the stuff that comes in packages and can be preserved, as opposed to egg-based fresh pasta that must be eaten quickly.

It turns out Marco Polo didn't bring spaghetti to the West from China. Rather, Germoleo said, the earliest known origins of dried pasta date from 12th century Sicily. The Norman king of Sicily, King Ruggero II, instructed a geographer to write a book about all that was known of the world.

In 1138, the geographer, Idrisi, reported back that the settlement of Trabia, west of Palermo, was making a type of vermicelli that was "sufficient to provide not only for Calabria but also the Muslim and Christian territories, where numerous cargoes are sent by sea," according a citation of the book in a museum publication, "Time for Pasta."

"This debunks the myth that Marco Polo brought it from China," Germoleo said. "Dried pasta is absolutely Italian."

Agostino Macri, a food security expert at the National Consumer's Union, said that pasta was in the "genome of Italians."

"A good dish of pasta puts you in a good mood," he said. But he cautioned against going overboard in consuming it, particularly with specialties like spaghetti all'amatriciana, a heavy dish using tomatoes and bacon-like pancetta that is common on Roman trattoria menus.

"It has a lot of calories," he warned.

The pasta that was served to the blind tasters had none of that: simply spaghetti tossed with a dash of olive oil. Each of the five brands tested ? Barilla, De Cecco, Gragnano and supermarket brands Coop and Conad ? was cooked in 1 liter of water salted with 7 grams of sea salt for every 100 grams of pasta.

While each sample cooked, women in white lab coats and latex gloves handed out small packets of noodles as they appear in the package, giving the whole affair a sterile, clinical feel when most Italians would tuck into a plate of pasta around the dinner table.

The testers ran their fingers slowly over the slender sticks, caressed them, noted the flecks of brown on the golden strands of semolina and the slight roughness of the grain in their hands. And then they answered an 11-page questionnaire asking them how the color, thickness, smell, taste and texture appealed to them. The results aren't for public consumption, Barilla said.

"For us the pasta is very important, especially for me," Gabriella Brescia said after sampling her five dishes as she packed up and headed home. "I could give up everything except pasta."

Exotic Animal Classifieds Offer Alternatives To Dog And Cat Pets

By Willie McGuire

Exotic animal classifieds are small advertisements advertising a wish to buy or sell animals that are not indigenous to a particular country. This class of advertisement is named 'classified' because in print newspapers large numbers of small advertisements are grouped under classes such as, 'Property for sale' or 'situations vacant' in order to assist people looking for specific things. Now that the Internet is rapidly replacing print media the practice is being copied by some websites.

The trade in exotic animals is unpopular in some quarters. It is averred that it encourages the decimation of animals in their natural habitats. For example, unscrupulous poachers will kill adult apes in order to capture young animals for the export trade. Cruelty and suffering can also be caused to animals being transported.

A counter argument is that the migration of certain species can save them from extinction and benefit the entire community of life. For example, although Panda bears are all owned by China they are exported for the pleasure of foreign visitors to zoos and also to encourage their reproduction in other parts of the world.

To counter objections one must consider certain facts that are incontrovertible. Fries land cattle have been exported around the world to the benefit of milk production. Dissemination of the breed has actually strengthened its position and cross breeding has resulted in new strains that are even more productive.

It would appear that many people who purchase exotic animals are city dwellers in search of a pet that will live happily indoors in an apartment or condo. It can become a conversation topic and a lovable companion that puts people in tactile contact with the non human world. Popular animals are small creatures such as pygmy pigs, snakes, chinchillas, hedgehogs and sugar gliders.

Sugar gliders seem to be fashionable as pets. Being social animals with character they can become fascinating companions for city dwellers who can rest assured that they will be happy to be left together as pairs during much of the day and provide companionship and fun for owners withing the confines of a city dwelling. Such suitable pets can be found in exotic animal classifieds.

Cloverleaf Schools saves $500000 in health insurance ? The ...

WESTFIELD TWP. ? Cloverleaf Schools will realize about $500,000 in health insurance savings next school year.

Superintendent Daryl Kubilus said the commission overseeing the district?s finances asked him to come up with about $200,000 to $300,000 in additional cuts to the district?s proposed recovery plan.

Daryl Kubilus

Cloverleaf is in fiscal emergency, which means a five-member state commission oversees all financial decisions.

The school board will not be required to make any cuts, however, because Kubilus learned from Cloverleaf?s health insurance provider that instead of a 10 percent projected increase in insurance premiums, they would increase by only 5 percent, saving $211,000 in fiscal year 2013.

Also, the board found out the district will have two premium holidays instead of one in fiscal year 2013, meaning it only will be required to make 10 health insurance premium payments instead of 11, saving another $320,000.

?We were able to do this without cutting any more programs or taking away any more opportunities for kids,? Kubilus said.

At Thursday?s meeting of the Financial Planning and Supervision Commission, Chairman Paul Marshall said the school board needed to come up with a contingency plan if the November levy fails.

?Not to threaten everybody,? he said, ?but people need to know we would like this additional revenue and that?s what happens if we don?t get it.?

The board has not yet decided whether to ask for an income tax or a levy. A proposed 6.9-mill levy for the November ballot would raise about $3.3 million.

The district has an estimated $677,007 deficit for fiscal year 2012 and about a $2.9 million projected deficit for fiscal year 2013, according to its five-year financial forecast, but this does not take into account the changes in the recovery plan.

The plan, which the Cloverleaf board has presented to the commission, includes some staffing cuts.

The commission is planning to vote on the recovery plan at its June 5 meeting, and the plan has to be submitted to the state superintendent by June 6.

Got a speeding ticket? Maybe your phone can help | New York City ...

It's aggravating to get a speeding ticket when you aren't speeding. It may be even more aggravating to try to fight the ticket in traffic court where it will be your word against the word of the police officer.

Now, creators of a new phone app think they have found a solution to this problem. Their app, called TicketDefender, measures the speed of a moving car using GPS and cell-tower readings. The hope of the creators is that drivers will be able to bring the apps' print-outs to court as high-tech evidence of their actual speed at the time they were ticketed.

So far, the app hasn't been tested in a real-life traffic court situation, and no one, not even the apps' creators, are sure about what will happen when it is.

The rules of evidence apply in traffic court. According to a legal expert who discussed the app with WGO News, a driver who wants to get the app's data admitted into evidence will have to show that all the equipment, including the driver's phone and GPS, was working properly at the time it was used to record the car's speed.

Ron Heiskell, the engineer who developed TicketDefender -- stands strongly behind his technology.

"[T]his is a technology whose time has come," he said. "It's more accurate than what the police officers are using."

That may be, but drivers who want to be early adopters of the app -- which is already available for iPhones for $1.99 -- should know they are entering uncharted legal territory.

Stay tuned for more from our New York traffic law blog ...

If you or a loved one has received a speeding ticket or other traffic citation, don't just dismiss it. Instead, consider contacting an attorney who understands New York's confusing legal system, and who can help you evaluate your options and make the right decisions.

(AP) ? The president of the Vatican bank was effectively ousted Thursday after receiving a unanimous vote of no-confidence from bank overseers for having leaked documents and failed to do his job at a critical time in the Holy See's efforts to show financial transparency, the Vatican and officials said.

Ettore Gotti Tedeschi has been a polarizing figure ever since he was named president of the bank, known as the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR, in 2009. He is under investigation for alleged money laundering by Italian magistrates, but the investigation isn't believed to have factored into the decision since the Vatican considers the probe to be motivated by outside political interests.

The Vatican said in a statement Thursday that the vote was taken because of Gotti Tedeschi's failure to fulfill the "primary functions of his office." He himself has told prosecutors that he barely paid attention to the bank's works, showing up only two days a week while tending to his primary position as head of Spain's Banco Santander's Italian unit in Milan.

In addition, Gotti Tedeschi was found to have leaked confidential documents to serve his personal and political interests, according to a source in the Vatican secretariat of state. The source requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss internal Vatican investigations. The Vatican is in the midst of a scandal over leaked documents and has begun a criminal investigation into the source of the leaks, as well as appointed a commission of cardinals to get to the bottom of it.

In the statement, the Vatican said the board had grown increasingly concerned about the governance of the bank and that the situation had deteriorated recently.

During a regularly scheduled board meeting Thursday, the five superintendents, who include the former No. 2 at Deutsche Bank, Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz, and Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus, a major U.S. Catholic fundraising organization, unanimously adopted a no-confidence motion and recommended that Gotti Tedeschi's mandate be terminated.

His fate isn't final. On Friday the cardinals who sit on the IOR's governing council are to meet to consider the board's decision. While it wasn't clear if they could ignore the no-confidence vote, the Vatican made clear the search was already on for a replacement.

"The council is now looking forward to search for a new and excellent president who will help the institute rebuild relationships between the institute and the financial community based on mutual respect based on internationally accepted banking standards," the IOR said.

The no-confidence vote comes at a critical time for the Holy See in its efforts to shed the IOR's image as a secretive tax haven battered by years of scandal.

The Holy See is heading into a July meeting of Moneyval, a Council of Europe committee that will determine whether it has complied with international norms to fight money laundering and terror financing. Transparency of the IOR's finances has been one of several criteria that the Moneyval evaluators have investigated.

It wasn't clear if the timing of Gotti Tedeschi's ouster was aimed at sending a message to the Moneyval investigators, but just last week the Holy See met with them to discuss the preliminary findings of their report.

Gotti Tedeschi has long painted himself as the symbol of Vatican financial transparency, but the vote Thursday indicated that his primary collaborators on the board had found him to be anything but. He was faulted for not keeping the board of superintendents apprised of the work of the bank, among other failings.

Recently, he raised eyebrows when he made a joke about Hitler, war and economics.

Gotti Tedeschi was a frequent contributor to the Vatican newspaper and went on a very public speaking tour extolling the benefits of a morality-based financial system and citing frequently from the pope's encyclical on the subject, "Charity in Truth."

Italian authorities placed Gotti Tedeschi and the IOR's top manager under investigation in September 2010 and seized ?23 ($30 million) from a Vatican bank account at the Rome branch of Credito Artigiano Spa, after the bank informed the Bank of Italy about possible violations of anti-money laundering norms.

Gotti Tedeschi and the Vatican have denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigation a misunderstanding. No charges have been filed, and the money was subsequently released after the Vatican passed a series of measures to combat money laundering and create a financial watchdog authority ? key requirements for the Moneyval process.

The Vatican bank was founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII to manage assets destined for religious or charitable works. Located in a tower just inside the gates of Vatican City, it also manages the pension system for the Vatican's thousands of employees.

The bank is not open to the public. Depositors are usually limited to Vatican employees, religious orders and people who transfer money for the pope's charities.

The Vatican bank's finances have long been shrouded in secrecy. Most famously, it was implicated in a scandal over the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano in the 1980s in one of Italy's largest fraud cases. Roberto Calvi, the head of Banco Ambrosiano, was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 in circumstances that remain mysterious.

Banco Ambrosiano collapsed following the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans the bank had made to several dummy companies in Latin America. The Vatican had provided letters of credit for the loans.

While denying any wrongdoing, the Vatican bank agreed to pay $250 million to Ambrosiano's creditors.
